Hudson Magic Show – Fun-raiser at the Brainerd VFW
On Wednesday, November 20, the community was treated to a special magic show that helped raise funds-and-fun for the Minnesota Disabled American Veterans (DAV). It was organized by Tammy Ebertowski and supported by many local businesses and organizations. Members of the Brainerd Honor Guard were there to post the colors and lead the attendees with the Pledge of Allegiance.
A short presentation was given by Trent Dilks, the Minnesota State DAV Legislative Committee Chairman, who explained what the DAV did for Veterans, their families and survivors. The sponsors of this event were generous with their donations to the DAV.
The magician, Hudson, is a veteran himself, and his magical manipulations kept the children enthralled, as well as the adults. Scarves disappeared, ropes were cut and re-tied, and a breakfast egg vanished with the help of his young assistant, Bailey. It was a great half-hour show, followed by a luncheon and a raffle with gifts for both kids and adults. It was a treat to watch the kids’ eyes sparkle as they came forward to pick out a prize from the table.
This magic show was a fun time for everyone who attended. A big thank you to the businesses and organizations who made it possible.

July 20, 2024: The Brainerd VFW Auxiliary recently hosted a presentation about changing the narrative of talking about suicide Monday, Sept. 9, at the Brainerd VFW
Approximately 20 community members came to learn about how they can help someone who may be considering suicide. The session was facilitated by Destiny Tinnes, North Central MN Suicide Prevention Regional Coordinator, and Kim Krebsbach, specialist in the Veterans Service Office. The focus of Tinnes’ presentation was to help people from all walks of life, and Krebsbach enlightened the group on the availability of help for veterans and active-duty military. A significant message from the presentation was, “get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” “We all have friends or family members who are going through tough times, and way too many veterans are lost to suicide each day,” said Sue Sterling, VFW Auxiliary member, in a news release. Anyone interested in receiving more information about suicide prevention can contact Tinnes at 218-821-2501 or by email at [email protected] . |
June 7, 2024: BRAINERD — Every year the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors two contests for grades K-8. Information about the contests is given to the elementary schools in the Brainerd/Baxter area and they share it with their students. This year’s drawing/coloring contest was titled “Illustrating America.” The vocal contest, in which the student needed to submit a video recording of themselves singing the national anthem, was entitled “Let’s Hear it for the Red, White & Blue.”
“Republicans and Democrats must agree that our children are the most important asset this country has,” the VFW announced in a news release. “Today’s children are inundated with unhealthy messages through modern media. But one thing that can and should be taught to them at a young age is Patriotism, and our schools play an important role in getting that message across.”
On May 13 and May 24, each winner was honored at a special presentation and given a monetary award and certificate.
“The Brainerd VFW Auxiliary is proud to announce the winners of those two contests and wants to thank all the parents and teachers who encouraged their students to submit drawings and recordings in support of patriotism,” the news release stated.
