The Brainerd VFW welcomes men and women veterans who served in war-torn countries. It’s a friendly place to talk it over. Those with a military connection can join the Auxiliary. The Brainerd Veterans of Foreign Wars post reminds everyone that Saturday, November 11th, is Veterans Day. It celebrates service to our country by ALL veterans. Thank a veteran when you see one or you meet one. Being in the military is a commitment to America. Those in service pledge their lives to defend our country, a vow not taken lightly. Everyone is invited to the 2nd Annual Freedom Festival on Saturday, June 17th, from noon to 4 pm. It is a free family outdoor event celebrating the freedom that we have in the USA. There will be a flag retirement ceremony, flag folding, a bean bag tournament, a silent auction, prizes, face painting and food. All this at the Brainerd VFW, downtown just off Laurel Street near 6th, on Saturday, June 17th, noon to 4 pm. Find details at BrainerdVFW.org

The Brainerd VFW reminds everyone to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremonies on May 29th, honoring those who died in service to our country. Ceremonies begin at 9 in the morning on the Laurel Street Bridge, followed by a ceremony 9:45 at the All-Veterans Memorial. The 10:30 parade on 3rd Avenue followed by an 11 O’clock ceremony, featuring the BHS band at Evergreen Cemetery. Then lunch for veterans and families at the Brainerd Legion. The Brainerd VFW annual Buddy Poppy drive is May 19th and 20th. Poppies are offered at local stores for donations to help needy local veterans and our community. March 29th is National Vietnam Veterans Day. The Brainerd VFW invites all Vietnam veterans, member or not, to stop in for free chicken wings and a beverage from 4 to 7 pm that day. Veterans are encouraged to bring photos and memorabilia to share and to talk about their experiences with others who were there.
