The annual Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen writing contest for school grades 6 through 8 and the Voice of Democracy speaking contest for grades 9 through 12 are now in progress. These patriotic writing and speaking competitions bring financial rewards and recognition to local students. Some go on to national. The submission deadline is October 31st. The Brainerd VFW reminds everyone to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 26th, honoring those who died in service to our country. Ceremonies start at 9 am at the Laurel Street Bridge, then 9:30 at the All-Veterans Memorial. There will be a 10 am parade on 3rd Avenue and a 10:30 ceremony, with the BHS band, at Evergreen Cemetery. Then lunch for veterans and their families at the Brainerd Legion. Volunteers from the Brainerd Veterans of Foreign Wars post will be at local stores this Friday and Saturday offering Buddy Poppies for donations. These red poppies symbolize the courage and sacrifice of servicemen and women. There is no overhead, 100% of the money goes to help veterans. Here is your chance to drop a dollar or more in a bucket to help needy veterans. Donate and wear a Poppy proudly on Buddy Poppy Days this Friday and Saturday. Details at BrainerdVFW.org
